NLC Students Participate in Emerging Researchers Conference

Students feature their own past scientific research and results

Two former NLC students, Christian Baer and Alexandria Stewart, participated in the Emerging Researchers Conference (ERN) in Washington, D.C. February 21- 24. The focus was on research in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM). Christian and Alexandria both won travel awards to attend the conference and to present the research they conducted with the CIMA LSAMP grant.  Christian presented his research on “Production of Molecular Tools to Study the Yeast Proteasome” and Alexandria presented her research on “Utilizing GC-MS to Identify the Chemical Composition of Essential Oil Pesticides.”

The students were joined by Professors Marsha Adrian and Erica Cain, instructors who have spearheaded the summer research program at Northeast Lakeview College for the past several years.

Christian and Alexandria have both earned scholarships to UTSA where they continue to do research.

“I am grateful for the opportunity the CIMA LSAMP Program provided me,” says Alexandria Stewart.  “I was able to do hands-on scientific research and experience real-life scientific opportunities at the community college level, experiences usually reserved for students in their graduate-level studies.” Stewart goes on to say that the experience has provided her numerous benefits as she continues her studies at the university.

About the CIMA (Ciencia, Ingeniería, y Matemáticas Aliados) LS-AMP (Louis Stokes Alliances for Minority Participation) grant

Students in the program are paired with a faculty mentor from a partnering university and participate in STEM-related research being conducted in a faculty's laboratory. Research is conducted at both the partnering university and on the NLC campus. Students completing the research receive a stipend.
